YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa

On July 28, 2014, United States President Barack Obama announced the creation of four Regional Leadership Centers in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa as part of his Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

Beginning 2015, these Centers will improve the availability and quality of leadership training programs and professional development opportunities for young African leaders.

The YALI Regional Leadership Center (RLC) East Africa, located at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, will serve 14 countries in East and Central Africa.

The Center is overseen by Deloitte East Africa and is supported by a growing number of African and international public and private partners.

It is a public-private partnership, capitalizing on the energy and dynamism of the private sector, the knowledge of African and American institutions, and the programmatic and educational resources of the U.S. Government.

The Center will focus on engaging young East African leaders from a wide range of organizations and backgrounds and with a diversity of experiences.

We are seeking to recruit a Learning/Curriculum Manager for YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa. This position will report to the RLC’s L/C Director, focusing on the following areas:

  • Improve RLC participant outcomes through the seamless integration of faculty experience and wisdom with curriculum development process expertise.
  • Endeavour to have the most sought after professional development program for RLC instructors and staff.
  • Work closely with instructors to design and roll out a curriculum that provides participants with a high quality program.
  • Lead research and incorporate current trends and data into the standard track curriculum taking into consideration the application of technology ‑ e.g., webinars, podcasts, etc. ‑ into the instructional methods.
  • Assist with the design of presentations for conferences and webinars.
  • Update training documents on a consistent basis and work closely with subject matter experts to evaluate and revise training tools as appropriate.
Learning Manager Job Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development and evaluation of new curriculum.
  • Conduct and monitor research and consult with faculty, staff and private/public sectors and civil society representatives in the design and development of new curriculum to meet participants’ ever evolving needs.
  • Apply research and data to improve the content, sequence, and outcomes of the teaching-learning process.
  • Maintain a research database that may be utilized to develop and review curriculum.
  • Apply the use of technology in the teaching-learning process.
  • Participate in the review/assessment of current curriculum to ensure that course/program is meeting intended objectives and requirements.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to examine curriculum and instruction program effectiveness, recommending how to improve curricula.
  • Work with a team of instructors who will assist in curriculum development.
  • Identify guest speakers and trainers on topic, and develop activities that will train teachers academic content and in best practices in education.
  • Provide budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Participate in scheduling visits for various certification processes.
  • Assist the L/C Director in the financial and administrative management of all teacher-based programs, including developing and meeting budget, fundraising, and hiring and supervising staff.
  • Prepares monthly development reports, and minutes.
Qualifications for Learning Manager Jobs in Kenya

  • Bachelor’s degree and teaching certification. Master’s degree in Education Administration or in Curriculum & Instruction will be an added advantage.
  • 5 years’ experience, with minimum of 2 years in program/curriculum development;
  • 3+ years of teaching experience with at least 2 years of training, mentoring and coaching teachers.
  • 3 years of experience in East Africa or sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Knowledge of current techniques and procedures used in the design and development of curriculum, including the delivery of virtual content, group work, gender relevant material, and attentive to the needs of disabled participants.
  • Knowledge of social networking and deliver of content using such tools.
  • Demonstrably strong writing, planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently; prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • High professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information.
  • Willingness to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Team player with positive attitude, sense of humor, energy, and dedication to collaboration.

This position is on a four (4) year fixed- term contract subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding from USAID.
