Technical Writer Job Description:
The technical writer will be responsible for creating and writing various types of user documentation, including how-to guides, references, manuals, cheat sheets, and instructions.
Key Areas
- Explain scientific and technical ideas in simple language.
- Write technical direction on product announcements, marketing brochures, advertisements, and marketing specifications.
- Meet with customer representatives, or publishers to establish technical specifications.
- Write clear and concise policies and procedures.
- Adjust copy as necessary and proofread for grammar and spelling.
- Follow a life cycle called document development life cycle.
- Release the document following final approval.
- Provide updates and different editions as necessary.
- Review manufacturer’s and trade catalogs.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce excellent writing and peer review technical documents for grammar, content and style of writing.
- Attend planning/briefing meetings.
- Collaborate with developers and managers to clarify technical issues
- Liaise with subject matter experts and sales and marketing specialists.
- Research and gather the information required for all tasks
- Understand the technology and applications for which documentation is to be prepared
- Gather, organize and analyst the information needs of the user.
- Commission, coordinate or prepare illustrations.
- Index and catalog material.
- Copy-editing.
- Work on and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Keep up to date with developments and trends in the industry and attending training courses
- Document business processes and write detailed functional requirements.
- Work under tight timeframes.
- Be able to work long, flexible hours
- Handle sensitive and complex issues with discretion and good judgment.
Education Requirements for Technical Writer Jobs in Kenya
- Bachelor of Arts in Technical Writing or a related field, such as journalism, English, communications or a
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering with a proven interest in writing.
- Exemplary writing and communication skills
