YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa
On July 28, 2014, United States President Barack Obama announced the creation of four Regional Leadership Centers in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa as part of his Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

Beginning 2015, these Centers will improve the availability and quality of leadership training programs and professional development opportunities for young African leaders.

The YALI Regional Leadership Center (RLC) East Africa, located at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, will serve 14 countries in East and Central Africa.

The Center is overseen by Deloitte East Africa and is supported by a growing number of African and international public and private partners.

It is a public-private partnership, capitalizing on the energy and dynamism of the private sector, the knowledge of African and American institutions, and the programmatic and educational resources of the U.S. Government.

The Center will focus on engaging young East African leaders from a wide range of organizations and backgrounds and with a diversity of experiences.

We are seeking to recruit an Alumni Relations Manager for YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa. This position will report to the RLC’s Alumni/Ambassador Relations Director, focusing on the following areas:
  • Support the planning and implementation of programs and projects that strategically engage A/A in strengthening RLC programs while providing tangible benefits to A/A and current RLC participants.
  • Oversee and manage messaging via A/A websites, publications, and social media with direction from the A/A
  • Relations Director’s communications strategy designed to benefit the organization and increase donations.
  • Analyzing trends and preparing reports regarding A/A activities and inputting data provided from A/A
  • Director constituency visits, surveys, and mass communications.
  • Support the A/A Association Board (or its equivalent) and the RLC’s academic and administrative leadership.
  • Plan and accomplish goals, perform a variety of tasks, and lead/direct the work of others based on experience and judgement.
  • A certain degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Your responsibilities will include the following:
  • Assist to implement and promote alumni programs that support the RLC’s strategic plan as well as the goals of the program; develop and submit for approval annual strategic and operating plans;
  • Oversee management of accurate and complete A/A database records; capture contact, biographical and career information of A/A via surveys, projects (e.g. directory), correspondence, website, etc;
  • Facilitate and oversee social media communications and web pages, and implement other messaging as outlined by A/A Director;
  • Maintain organizational calendar of A/A-related events and activities;
  • Support the establishment of relationships with a wide range of A/A in the region and internationally;
  • Educate graduating RLC leaders/students about A/A benefits and engage them in programs;
  • Work with the Partnership Manager to implement and manage career networking services (internships, mentorships, job placement) for students and A/A;
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in increasing support from A/A, identifying and qualifying A/A donations; communicate development-related activities via written contact reports filed in an appropriate constituent database software;
  • Responsible for managing the A/A budget and helping to identify ways to tailor programs and messaging to available resources and monitoring expense against that budget;
  • Prepare monthly development reports of A/A activity and volunteer database;
  • Capable to provide ad-hoc reports and evidence-supported analysis based upon A/A needs;
  • Provide guidance and meaningful opportunities to A/A volunteers.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Education, Communication or equivalent field.
  • A minimum of 6 years working experience of which 3 years should be in field or in A/A-type relations and external affairs.
  • Demonstrated accomplishment in fostering productive relationships with volunteers and developing volunteer leadership.
  • At least 2 years of work in East Africa or sub-Saharan Africa is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the RLC and with A/A, other constituents and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build constituency programs and activities.
  • Extensive experience with constituent database software.
  • Demonstrably strong writing, planning and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility and initiative, as well as the ability to work independently, combined with the skills for thriving in a team environment to achieve institutional goals.
  • High professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information.
  • Willingness to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.

This position is on a four (4) year fixed- term contract subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding from USAID. .
